I am still trying to work out some type of "conflict" and I'm thinking in the car scenes with a dialogue. The dialogue could be Maria (mom) expressing some of her worries and Selena (kid) saying something along the lines of "I'll be fine, I'm not you." Other car scenes day one filled with music and laughing, night ones with kid falling asleep allowing mom's mind to wander to worry. I hesitate to add too much more detail here as I want to see how the current story reads and if the plot points are being understood.
